The Threat Of Nuclear Conflict Strikes Once Again

A growing threat of nuclear conflict in the world gives a feeling for many of us that nothing is sustainable. It may seem that it is just a matter of time for the first nuclear rocket to be launched. There are escalated controversies between different nuclear powers that simultaneously pose a threat to the rest of the world and are potentially disrupting global peace. The recent tensions between India and Pakistan still prevail as the issues have yet not reached any mutual reconciliations. At the same time, the USA and Korea are also on a roller-coaster of tensions where Korea faces sanctions that need to be addressed to so the proliferation of nuclear weapons would be curbed. In situations like these, one does not see an end to the worlds’ nuclear problems.

Russia‘s statement provoked confusion

The recent turn of events has seen Russia officially suspending its participation in the INF Treaty with the US. The accusations of US on Moscow’s violation of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was the step that initiated such tensions between the two countries. The treaty was declared to ban both nuclear powers from the developing or setting up a ground-launched cruise or ballistic missiles within a certain range. The two countries are repeatedly accusing each other of carrying out violations where both parties deny any such allegations on them.

NATO and Washington have reportedly accused Moscow of said violations. The NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg described the Treaty as the “cornerstone for European security for decades”, and stated that Russia should return to the agreement of the INF Treaty. However, this does not seem to be happening. Russia and the US have controversial relations for many other reasons as well, which include allegations against Moscow’s aggression on Ukraine, and its interfering in US elections. The accusation of Moscow being involved in the Syrian war is yet another very sensitive issue that cannot be overlooked while assessing the current situation. Warnings have followed from both sides which do not look like something that can be underestimated.
