Germany is reportedly drafting plans to construct bunkers in locations that could serve as nuclear shelters, signaling preparations for a potential World War III, according to GB News.
Underground parking lots and metro stations are being considered for conversion into emergency shelters as tensions between Russia and the West continue to escalate. Berlin has been a key ally to Kyiv since Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, consistently providing military support.
Strengthening Domestic Defense
As relations with Russia grow increasingly strained, Germany is working to bolster its internal defenses. Authorities are developing a comprehensive database of existing bunkers and shelters, encompassing both public facilities and privately owned properties.
A mobile app will allow users to locate nearby shelters, and citizens are being encouraged to create their own shelters in basements, garages, or other suitable areas. A spokesperson for the ministry noted that coordinating this large-scale initiative will require time and effort.
The project involves the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, along with other organizations. Historically, Germany had around 2,000 operational bunkers built during World War II and the Cold War. However, this number has dwindled to just 579 today. With a population of 84 million, the remaining shelters can accommodate only about 480,000 people.
“World War III Has Already Begun”
Earlier this week, a senior NATO military official urged businesses to prepare for wartime scenarios. Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, stated, “European and American business leaders must understand that their commercial decisions have strategic implications for their countries’ security.” He emphasized, “Companies must be prepared for scenarios involving military conflict.”
Meanwhile, former Ukrainian military commander Valeriy Zaluzhny declared that “World War III has already begun,” citing the involvement of Russia’s allies—China, Iran, and North Korea—as evidence of a global-scale conflict.
“I believe that by 2024, we can fully recognize that World War III has begun,” Zaluzhny said, warning of the growing international scope of the crisis.
A Call to Action
Germany’s preparations highlight the urgency of addressing civil defense in an era of increasing global instability. With the potential for a broader conflict looming, efforts to fortify national security and ensure public safety are gaining momentum. As the international community watches these developments closely, Germany’s proactive measures could serve as a model—or a warning—of the challenges ahead.
