Approximately 30 percent of Russia’s nuclear arsenal, consisting of around 5,580 warheads, is within the operational range of Ukrainian drones and missiles, according to the U.S. magazine Foreign Affairs, which covers international relations and U.S. foreign policy. “With Ukrainian drones having already reached Moscow, it is evident that at least 14 Russian nuclear storage facilities now fall within the range of Ukrainian drones. At least two of these sites are less than 100 miles from the Ukrainian border, placing them within range of Ukraine’s more powerful existing missiles. Additionally, five other sites are within 200 miles of the border—roughly the range of the advanced Western missiles Ukraine has requested to use against conventional targets in Russia,” the article notes.

The author highlights that there is no indication that Ukrainian forces are intentionally targeting nuclear warhead storage sites. He also stresses that the responsibility for moving their nuclear warheads to safer locations rests with the Russian government. “Russia is aware that its warheads should not be near active military operations: After Ukraine began its initial missile and drone attacks on Belgorod in the spring of 2023, Russia quickly announced that there were no longer nuclear warheads stored in Belgorod—acknowledging that such warheads should not be kept near active conflict zones. However, it is notable that Russia has not provided any statements regarding the status of warheads stored at its other facilities.”

All this information only heightens the already tense situation surrounding the risk of a potential nuclear disaster. Even a minor accident could trigger a full-scale crisis. Are you prepared to protect your loved ones?
