On Wednesday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russia was preparing its forces for a “massive” nuclear strike in response to an “enemy’s nuclear strike” after Russia test-fired ballistic missiles.
According to Russia’s Interfax news agency, Shoigu said there would also be training to “deliver a massive strategic strike force nuclear strike in response to an enemy nuclear strike.”
Putin watched the test launch of ballistic missiles, the Kremlin said
Russian President Vladimir Putin watched ballistic missile exercises remotely on Wednesday, the Kremlin said, hours after Russia began withdrawing its ratification of the landmark nuclear test ban treaty.
“Under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, exercises were held with the land, sea and air components of the nuclear deterrent force,” the Kremlin said. “During the exercise, practical launches of ballistic and cruise missiles took place.”
The Council of the Russian Federation, or the upper house of parliament, voted unanimously on Wednesday in a plenary session for a law to revoke the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), TASS news agency reported. All 156 senators approved the respective bill without any votes against it.
