Are We Prepared for a Nuclear Disaster?
Tonight, a Russian drone has hit the Chernobyl reactor, a chilling reminder of the growing nuclear risks in modern warfare. We have repeatedly warned that it is not a question of if, but when a catastrophic nuclear event will unfold. The continued bombing, shelling, and drone attacks in countries with a high density of nuclear power plants—some of them the largest in the world—pose an unprecedented risk to global security.
A Recipe for Disaster
Targeting nuclear power stations, whether intentional or accidental, is a recipe for disaster. A direct hit on an active reactor or spent fuel storage facility could trigger a large-scale radiological catastrophe, threatening millions with radiation exposure, contamination of air and water, and long-term ecological damage. The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 serves as a stark reminder of what even a single reactor failure can do—except this time, we might not be dealing with an accident, but an act of war.
