German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “imperialist plan will not end with the conquest of Ukraine – this will only be the beginning.”
Speaking at the German Ambassadors’ Conference, Merz stressed:
“We are experiencing increasingly intense hybrid Russian attacks every day, including strikes against our infrastructure.”
He also highlighted Moscow’s “provocations in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.”
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Germany has become the second-largest supplier of military aid to Kyiv. Berlin remains highly alert to Moscow’s attempts to orchestrate sabotage operations across Europe.
With U.S. President Donald Trump casting doubt on the future strength of the transatlantic alliance, Merz is pushing to expand Germany’s defense capabilities. His vision: to build the strongest conventional army in Europe.
“We face important tasks,” Merz said on Monday, emphasizing the need to create a new security architecture designed to last for decades.
He added:
“What we used to call the liberal world order is under pressure from many sides, including from Western politicians themselves. A new systemic conflict has begun between liberal democracies and autocracies.”
One thing, however, is clear: Russia will not stop. If the military conflict spreads into Europe and NATO countries, the use of nuclear weapons becomes an unavoidable threat.
