Fallout shelter, nuclear bunker, survival shelter — whatever you want to call them, the purpose of these underground structures remains the same. To protect our loved ones and ourselves from the craziness that seems to have taken over the world recently.
If you’ve come to the conclusion that it’s time to put your fate into your own hands and build a shelter like this for yourself, here are a few pointers to get started.
An underground shelter can be purpose-built or improvised (for instance, you could convert your basement into a bunker).
Either option can work well — what really matters is ensuring that your fallout shelter has the right facilities. I always suggest following the “Rule of Threes” of survivalism. This rule of thumb that says you can stay alive for:
Apply the same principles when building your shelter.
Since we can only survive for three minutes without oxygen, your first task should be installing an NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) air filtration system. We have a few different options available at Castellex to ensure you retain access to clean, healthy air.
Next comes food and water, so make sure you have plenty of bottled water and non-perishable items to eat.
We might not survive for long without food, water, and oxygen, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only things we need to consider. An existence without good hygiene and some form of entertainment isn’t going to be pleasant for anyone
You also need to think about a WC, shower, and similar. In most cases, you can get away with a bio-toilet and wet tissues, but some people may want to consider more sophisticated installations.
Another big consideration is electric power (battery packs and a power generator) so you can keep everything else going.
Unless you fancy sleeping on the floor, you’ll also need some kind of bed or mattress. Maybe some entertainment too — think table games and books.
Finally, some people may feel safer with guns to help them protect their supplies and family — but this is optional, and you should always follow the rules of the country you live in.
Sorting out your shelter can get complicated. So, if you’re struggling to figure out what to prioritize, go back to the “Rule of Three.” You won’t need anything after three weeks if you run out of food. You won’t need anything after three days if you run out of water. You won’t need anything after three minutes if you run out of clean air. Prioritize, prioritize, and again, prioritize what you’re buying, storing, and preparing. Ultimately, you won’t last long without a good filtration system, so make sure you take a look at we have on offer at Castellex.
