Castellex has warned before that artificial intelligence would not remain confined to offices, smartphones and harmless consumer applications. The same technology transforming medicine, engineering and scientific research can also be used by military researchers and other actors seeking to develop more effective weapons.

That warning can no longer be dismissed as science fiction.

New research reported by the BBC has shown that researchers were able to bypass safeguards in two artificial intelligence models developed by Chinese AI company Moonshot and persuade them to provide information about biological weapons and assassination.

The security researchers have not demonstrated that the biological-weapons information produced by the models would work in practice. But that is not the most important point.

The important point is that the barrier has already been crossed: advanced AI can be induced to engage with subjects its safety systems were specifically designed to prevent it from discussing.

And this is not an isolated warning.

Anthropic recently disclosed cases involving scientists using its Claude AI models for biological research with potentially dangerous dual-use applications. One case concerned research involving the chikungunya virus and was associated with work intended to take place at a military research institute.

Anthropic itself concluded that biological misuse is among the most serious risks presented by frontier AI.

Castellex has been warning about this direction of travel for some time.

AI Changes What Is Possible

Biological weapons are not new. What is changing is the technology available to those researching them.

Artificial intelligence can process enormous quantities of scientific information, identify patterns, assist researchers and dramatically accelerate tasks that previously required much more time and specialist effort.

The International AI Safety Report has warned that general-purpose AI could potentially help less-experienced users access biological and chemical weapons knowledge while allowing experts to design more dangerous threats or accomplish existing tasks with less effort.

The same capabilities that can accelerate development of medicines, vaccines and treatments therefore have an unavoidable dual-use dimension.

It would be wrong to claim that today’s evidence proves AI-designed biological weapons have already been deployed. It would be equally unwise to assume that the technology will never be used for that purpose.

AI capabilities are advancing extraordinarily quickly.

Military organisations throughout history have adopted technologies that provide strategic advantages. There is little reason to expect artificial intelligence to be different.

Future biological threats could therefore become increasingly sophisticated, difficult to identify and potentially extremely dangerous.

Look at the World Around Us

This technological development is happening at a particularly uncomfortable moment.

The international security environment has deteriorated. Major wars are taking place, geopolitical tensions remain high, military expenditure is increasing and nuclear weapons remain part of the strategic arsenals of several states.

At the same time, artificial intelligence is rapidly lowering barriers to advanced research and engineering.

Nuclear, biological and chemical threats should therefore no longer be viewed solely as Cold War scenarios belonging to another generation.

For families considering their long-term security, there is a much more practical question:

If the unthinkable happened, would you be able to protect the people you love?

Preparation does not mean predicting exactly what will happen.

It means creating options before you need them.

Building a Fallout Shelter

A genuine protective shelter is considerably more than an underground room.

Its location and construction depend on the property, expected threats, number of occupants and required period of protection. Wherever possible, a shelter should be designed by suitably qualified structural and protective-engineering professionals.

The structure needs to provide appropriate protection from blast effects and, in a nuclear scenario, reduce exposure to radioactive fallout.

Entrances and penetrations require careful consideration because the weakest part of a shelter can determine the effectiveness of the entire protected space.

The shelter also needs reliable water storage, sanitation, emergency lighting, communications, food, first-aid equipment, independent power arrangements and sufficient space for the expected occupants.

But there is another requirement that is sometimes overlooked.

People inside still need to breathe.

A reinforced concrete room may provide physical protection, but it does not automatically provide protection against contaminated outside air.

That is why NBC/CBRN air filtration and positive-pressure ventilation should be considered an integral part of a properly designed protective shelter.

Remember the Rule of Threes

One of the best-known concepts in survivalism is the Rule of Threes.

It is not an exact scientific timetable, but it provides a useful way of understanding priorities in an emergency. In broad terms, a person may survive approximately:

3 minutes without breathable air
3 hours without adequate shelter in extreme conditions
3 days without water
3 weeks without food

The order matters.

People frequently begin emergency preparation by storing food. Food is important, but in an environment contaminated by radioactive particles, chemical agents or biological hazards, breathable air becomes the immediate priority.

You cannot store enough ordinary bottled air to sustain a family inside a shelter for an extended emergency.

A protected shelter therefore requires a controlled means of bringing outside air into the protected space while removing relevant contaminants and maintaining positive pressure.

Positive pressure helps ensure that when small imperfections or leakage points exist in the protected envelope, air tends to move outward rather than allowing untreated contaminated air to be drawn inward.

This is the role of an NBC/CBRN filtration system.

Air550HCC Ultimate – Family CBRN Protection

For family-sized shelters, the Castellex Air550HCC Ultimate has been developed to cover the principal air-filtration and ventilation requirements of a protected shelter.

The system combines staged filtration including an F7 pre-filter, H14 HEPA filtration and activated-carbon filtration.

The HEPA stage provides very high-efficiency filtration of airborne particulate contamination, while the activated-carbon stage addresses relevant gaseous contaminants.

The system supplies approximately 145 m³/h of filtered air and is designed for family and small-group protected spaces.

The Air550HCC Ultimate also incorporates features intended for emergency operation, including automatic electric dampers, an electronic control unit, two backup batteries and a hand-crank generator for emergency electrical generation.

When correctly integrated with the shelter and an appropriate blast-protected overpressure valve, the system allows the protected space to operate under positive pressure.

A shelter protects you from the environment outside.

The CBRN filtration system protects the air inside it.

Both matter.

The Time to Prepare Is Before the Emergency

Nobody knows what the next major global emergency will be.

It may never directly affect your family.

But recent developments demonstrate how quickly technologies that were once theoretical can become practically accessible.

Artificial intelligence is bringing enormous benefits to humanity. At the same time, the same capabilities can be sought by people and organisations interested in developing weapons.

The question is therefore no longer whether AI could conceivably become relevant to biological-weapons research.

Evidence already shows AI systems being used and tested in biological research with serious dual-use implications.

What happens next is impossible to predict with certainty.

Preparation is about not needing certainty.
